Your ultimate layering guide
Gyms have closed, once again (sigh), so if you want to continue with that January health kick you had planned, the living room and the great outdoors are the only way to do it. Some of us like to work out in the comfort of our own homes, but for others, a workout is an opportunity to get out of the house and take a break from the same four walls. If you want to start running, but don’t know what to wear, we got you covered.
Choosing an outfit for a winter run can be tricky to navigate. Not only is it dark but it can also be chilly too. Those little running shorts aren’t gonna cut it. We’ve put together an easy guide to help you figure out what to wear on your winter runs.
If you are going for a run in the cold weather, here are our top tips for staying safe and warm.
1. Wear a hat
It might seem simple, but according to studies, 10% of your total heat is lost through your head, so wearing a hat is super important. If you feel like you are overheating, you can simply put it in your pocket or tuck it into your waistband.
2. Layered tops
Focus on layering your tops, rather than wearing one extra thick one. Start with a sports bra, add a thermal or moisture wicked long sleeve top, followed by a fleece and a wind proof- light weight jacket that won’t affect your form. 3. Leggings and bottoms
When going for a run in the cold, your legs produce a lot of heat, so you need less layers on your bottom half than your top. Opt for a pair of moisture wicked leggings, and if it is REALLY cold, maybe consider adding a pair of windproof track pants over the top.
4. Lip balm
Avoid cracking and wind chill by ensuring you have plenty of protection on your face. As well as moisturiser, lip balm can be a life saver.
