Quick and simple ways to support your community or become an ally
In case you didn’t already know, it’s LGBT+ History Month. This is a time we take to reflect on the brave individuals that have fought for the rights of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Non-Binary communities over the years.
Each year, the celebraton is themed and this year it is ‘Body, Mind, Spirit’. It has even been introduced into the school’s curriculum for the second year in a row as part of PSHE learning.
With society coming on leaps and bounds every year, it can be easy to forget the plight that many of the LGBTQ+ community face each day, we still have a long way to go. With alarming suicide rates amongst the LGBTQ+ community, higher risk of facing hate crimes and reports of a ‘lower life satisfaction’ than the rest of the UK population, there is work to be done.
If you want to do your bit and support your community or become an ally, take a look at these 5 petitions you can sign.
When is LGBTQ History Month?
LGTBQ History month falls every February worldwide
Why is LGBTQ History Month celebrated?
We celebrate LGBTQ history month every February, in order to pay respects to the people that have fought for gay, trans, bi-selxual and non-binary rights over the years. It is a way of looking how far we have come, as well as looking to what still needs to be done to make the world a better place for our LGBTQ+ friends.
5 petitions to sign to support lgbt+ History month
Remember, every vote counts. A petition only needs 100,000 signatures to be considered for debate in parliament. That’s not many when you REALLY think about it…
- Add more LGBTQ+ content to the curriculum
- Funding anti-bullying schemes in school
- Make conversion therapy illegal
- Require schools to provide gender neutral toilets
- End foster care discrimination
1. Add more LGBTQ+ content to the curriculum
Quote from the petition founder: “It is so important for LGBT+ youth to feel included in the curriculum that are taught in school, and at the moment here is simply not enough LGBT+ representation. Help us to raise awareness of this issue by signing this petition.”
2. Continue to fund the LGBT anti-bullying scheme in schools
Quote from the petition founder:”It was announced on 19th November 2020 that the government is axing the £4mil a year anti-bullying of LGBT young people scheme. This scheme seems vital and value for money at a fraction of the national budget. We call for it to be retained.”
3. Make all forms of LGBT Conversion Therapy Practices illegal in 2021
Quote from the petition founder:”I urge the government to make the lives of LGBT youths that little bit better in 2021 by banning all forms of GCT. By banning this abhorrent practice, we can lead globally in terms of LGBT rights & Mental Health wellness”
4. Provide gender neutral toilets in colleges and schools
Quote from the petition founder: “Now, more than ever, trans and non binary children, all across the UK struggle to use the gender assigned toilets in school, partly because of bullying. Many children struggling with their gender identity would feel a lot more comfortable and confident using a gender neutral toilet. Children shouldn’t have to be scared or worried about using a toilet.”
5. End foster care discrimination
Quote from the petition founder (USA- based) “Despite a shortage of foster homes, our government is allowing taxpayer-funded discrimination based on the religious beliefs of foster care and adoption provider agencies. That means agencies can turn away otherwise qualified potential foster parents—particularly LGBTQ and religious minority parents”
