Ask any hairstylist in Los Angeles what all the girls are requesting (I asked our girl Alissa Smith from MeCHE), and it’s that signature blunt-cut + beachy wave. There’s one hairstyle that seems to reign from all of Sunset Boulevard to the rooftop of Ace Hotel: collarbone lobs, sunkissed strands, and a perfectly tousled bedhead that makes one think, “Welp, she had a good night.” Any glance at a salon’s Instagram (MeCHE, Ramirez Tran, Nine Zero One to name a few…) just shows how stylists have mastered the meticulous craft of the perfect lob…Los Angeles has become a lob factory, if you will. But since blowouts only last so long, and the majority of us can’t exactly use our rent money for a haircut, there are products that help achieve that “IDGAF on the outside, but I actually spend a lot of time doing this” look (a moment of silence for ironic amount of effort put into looking effortless). See some of our hair care favorites that have a special place in our yoga bags.
1. Elizabeth and James Nirvana Dry Shampoo
What would lazy girls of the world do without our favorite dry shampoos? Tbh, the idea makes me shudder and I don’t wanna think about it. But Elizabeth and James Nirvana Dry Shampoo is everything, not just because they come in the infamous scent duo (dry shampoos typically smell too soap-y, or like baby powder for my preference), but the formula really does it for me. You can spray it all up in your roots and it mattifies instantly, no extra combing needed, all while leaving zero residue. It could be my inner lazy girl talking, but minimal effort guys! No one really needs to know when you go straight to drinks after your sweaty Soulcycle sesh.
2. Sachajuan Ocean Mist
A good salt spray brings your dreams of being a California beach bombshell to life, bikini not included. But if going to the beach to get your hair strategically misted by seabreeze isn’t a feasible option for you every morning (hey, not all of us live in Malibu), I suggest Sachajuan Ocean Mist. You’ve most likely seen these in boutiques around Beverly Hills–or online at Birchbox, for non-Angelenos. This mist is lightweight with almost no fragrance, so it doesn’t feel too harsh for everyday use. While the slight tackiness dries up (quickly, I might add), you can easily mold and twist your strands to your heart’s desire. It’s almost too easy.
3. R+Co Tinsel Smoothing Oil
I love beauty oils so much (facial oils, hair oils, fragrance oils, the works…), that I’m totally guilty of overdoing it by overapplication. But then I found R+Co Tinsel Smoothing Oil, which they call a “dry oil” because it’s virtually weightless. Like really, really weightless. So now I can go crazy with it. The size is nice and compact for on-the-go ladies. Good for managing frizzies, conditioning dry ends, and keeping your hair shiny AF. Your locks will oh-so-perfectly catch light and create that halo effect around your face better than any Snapchat filter can do.
4. Davines Love Shampoo
So, we already know that oils are commonly the secret weapon to managing frizz (see above). Powerful olive oil extracts are the real MVP in this ridiculously coveted Davines Love Shampoo. It gives you silkiness you can feel upon your very first lather. Not so much a mound of suds, but more of a milky frothy texture and keeps your hair slippery and tangle-free while you wash up. Lest we forget, great hair care starts in the shower. And since this shampoo/conditioner does all the work for you, our sacred 10 minutes can really be optimized for more important things, like mastering that falsetto.
5. Living Proof Perfect Hair Day 5-in-1 Treatment
For days you have time for only one step (meaning most days for me..ha…ha), this 5-in-1 treatment volumizes, smooths, conditions, strengthens, and adds polish to your tresses. It was kind of a new concept for me, that 1) a creamy formula can volumize, and 2) it seriously takes place of 5 products. Living Proof also brags about their two award winning patented molecules that treat without weighing down, and volumize without the stiffness. Apparently, we can patent molecules now. And if they can do this all the time, I’m cool with that.
6. Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray
Since hair struggles involve that delicate balance between disguising hair that’s too lived-in (read: oily, see #1) and not being lived-in enough, that’s where Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray comes in. This spray lightly waxes up your just-washed hair that might be “too clean” and gives you instant, sexy, buildable lift. It’s a hair classic for a reason, and if the chic black and gold packaging doesn’t lure you in, the signature Cote d’Azur bergamot scent will. It’s smells so dreamy, that it’s almost a perfume replacement.
7. Ouai Treatment Masks
In case your Instagram feed hasn’t told you yet, celeb hairstylist Jen Atkin (yes yes..for the Kardashians) and founder of Mane Addicts just launched a haircare line. And I unapologetically admit, it’s pretty damn good. When your hair feels brittle, these masks are a serious upgrade from your DIY coconut oil treatment (it’s actually made with artichoke extract, which repels UV rays from the sun. Oooh, fancy!). They come in a pack of 8, so you can stick some in your car, your purse, and your other-other purse. Just apply after you shampoo, chill for 5 minutes, and rinse.
